FAQs

How is Integrative Medicine Different?

Integrative medicine, often referred to as integrative or holistic medicine, combines conventional Western medicine with alternative or complementary therapies. The key difference lies in its approach, which focuses on treating the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—rather than just the symptoms of a specific ailment or disease.

Here are a few ways integrated medicine differs from conventional medicine:

  1. Holistic Approach: Integrative medicine looks at the patient as a whole, considering their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. It aims to address the root causes of health issues rather than just treating symptoms.

  2. Combination of Therapies: It incorporates various treatment modalities from both conventional medicine (such as medications, surgeries, and diagnostic procedures) and complementary approaches (like acupuncture, herbal medicine, massage therapy, mindfulness, yoga, etc.).

  3. Personalized Care: Treatment plans are often tailored to the individual, taking into account their unique needs, preferences, and lifestyle.

  4. Prevention and Wellness: Integrated medicine often emphasizes preventive measures and lifestyle changes to promote overall health and well-being, not just focusing on curing diseases.

  5. Collaborative Approach: Practitioners in integrated medicine often work in interdisciplinary teams, collaborating across different specialties to provide comprehensive care.

  6. Patient-Centered Care: The patient is actively involved in decision-making regarding their health, encouraged to take responsibility for their well-being and participate in their treatment plans.

  7. Emphasis on Evidence-Based Practices: While some alternative therapies lack extensive scientific evidence, integrated medicine often seeks evidence-based complementary approaches that have proven effectiveness or show promise through research.

  8. Mind-Body Connection: Integrated medicine acknowledges the interconnectedness of mental, emotional, and physical health, promoting therapies that address this mind-body relationship.

This approach can be beneficial for individuals seeking a more comprehensive and personalized approach to their health care. However, it's important to consult with qualified practitioners and discuss any integrated treatments with your primary care provider to ensure safety and effectiveness, particularly if combining treatments from different approaches.

What kind of Psychotherapy do you provide?

In our practice, we offer a range of services tailored to support individuals and relationships. Specializing in psychotherapy focused on couples, we utilize the Gottman Counseling Framework to strengthen connections and foster healthier relationships.

Additionally, we provide family dynamic therapy employing the Collaborative and Proactive Solutions model, aimed at resolving conflicts and enhancing communication within family units.

Alongside these specialized approaches, we offer individual counseling for adults, providing a safe and supportive space to explore personal challenges, enhance self-awareness, and navigate life's complexities.

We compliment our psychotherapy practice with the use of Biofeedback as needed for individuals who require assistance with Mind-Body regulation where meditation and breath work have failed or are not appropriate strategies for the individual.

We will soon be offering Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy through partnership with local experts and will be releasing our plan for these services in the later part of 2025.

Can NPs do the same thing as your family doctor?

Nurse Practitioners enjoy a very broad scope of practice that includes writing prescriptions, ordering tests and diagnostics and referring to specialists. There have been a multitude of studies conducted that show that NP care in the family medicine setting is equivalent to that of a family doctor.

Anyone seeking care at En-Bloc should be comforted with knowing that they can expect the same quality of care as they would at any medical clinic. In fact, we aim to supersede your expectations with an enhanced experience by including prevention, education and alternative medicine solutions to your care plan.

Why do we charge fees directly to patients?

While Nurse Practitioners in Ontario offer excellent access to fulsome primary care services, they cannot directly bill OHIP for their time or services provided to patients. Therefore, we need to directly bill our patients for our time and overhead expenses. Any lab tests, referrals to specialists or diagnostic imaging is covered by OHIP just as you would expect from any other primary care clinic.

The Government of Alberta has recently decided to incorporate Nurse Practitioner care into their billing structure, and we are hopeful that Ontario will do the same in the near future.

We encourage everyone to contact our local MPP to advocate for Nurse Practitioners in Ontario to be included in OHIP insured services.

Can I email or text the clinic with medical questions?

Given we are a small clinic without administrative support, we have made the decision to not to offer this service. We ask that if patients have any medical questions, require prescription refills or have questions about their care plan, that they book a follow up appointment with their NP.
